Aritar

While you are here, you get a chance to caress the untainted form of nature, the luxuriant greenery leaves your soul enchanted and the existence of the wild animals around leaves your soul enthralled.


Dolls’ Pavilion

As soon as you enter the palace, the first sight to greet visitors is a beautiful set of eclectic artefacts displayed in the Gombe Thotti or Dolls’ Pavilion. It was once a showcase for the dolls and palanquins featured in the Dussehra celebrations but is now a gallery of European and Indian sculpture and ceremonial objects. It is here that one can see the ceremonial Golden Howdah, an elaborately decorated throne made of 84 kg of gold and precious stones. Another fascinating exhibit, and a hit with children, is an elaborate clock with antoinettes, mechanical elements and a procession of dolls that is activated on the hour.


Mysore Palace

In Mysore you are never too far away from a heritage building or a mansion with royal connection. Not for nothing is Mysore called the City of Palaces. Beautiful manors or stately homes, with decorated porches, archways and terraces, exquisite balustrades and cornices are visible at every turn. The feeling of being in the middle of a bygone era, mysteriously transplanted to the present day, is rather difficult to shake off. The focal point is of course the Amba Vilas Palace, popularly known as the Mysore Palace and visitors regularly catch glimpses of it while criss-crossing the city to various sights of the city. It has an overpowering presence and it’s easy to spend many hours, but make sure don’t miss these.


Sri Lakshmi Ramana Swamy Temple

Within the palace premises and scattered all along the walls are many temples associated with the royal household which are still functioning to this day. Of these, the Sri Lakshmi Ramana Swamy Temple is of immense importance since it is among the oldest and royals were crowned here. The 19th century Shweta Varahaswamy Temple, named after an incarnation of Vishnu, is located to the south gate of the palace. It has beautiful murals from the Ramayana and Bhagavatha. In the Southeast and the Northeast are temples dedicated to Shiva, Kodi Bhairavaswami and Trinethraswami Temples, respectively. Sri Prasanna Krishnaswami Temple is dedicated to Krishna and has bronze statues. Other temples in the premises include the Kille Venkataramana Swami Temple, Someshwara temple dedicated to Shiva, Bhuvaneshwari temple with its unique Surya Mandala, and Gayatri temple with exquisite stone sculptures.
